How to Choose Correct Replacement Axle For Trailer With Mobile Home Axle
Question:
I have an equipment trailer with 2 Dexter axles, currently it uses 14.5 inch rims that bolt on in similar fashion to those on a mobile home. What hubs or kit can I use to convert these axles to regular wheels? Or a hub that is non-mobile home style, since that style is illegal in my jurisdiction. One axle has brakes, the other does not. Axle with brakes Manufacturer Part Number K08-222-91 Wheel bearings 1-3/8inch L68149 x 1-1/4inch LM67048, grease seal I.D. = 1.938, hex bolts 9/16-18, Rim Clamps and 2.45inch O.D. dust cap. “Spider” idler hub Manufacturer Part Number 008-261-91 Mobile home idler hub for axle with bearing LM67048 OUTER L68149 INNER CROSS TO, 8-261

Thank you for that detailed info; and like you mentioned those are hubs for mobile home axles, which an equipment trailer should not have (mobile home axles are one-time use). There aren't any standard hubs with the correct combination of bearings and seal that fit the spindle on your axle, so there is no way to convert it. What that means is you'll need to replace the axles entirely. I know that's not the best-case scenario, but it really is the only option.
In order to choose the correct replacement axle for your trailer you will need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center. The hub face (where your axle contacts the wheel and tire) is measured from the outer edge of one hub face to the outer edge of the opposite hub face. The other thing you need to know is the weight capacity of the axle you need, which should match or exceed the GVWR of your trailer.
For example, the Dexter Trailer Axle # 7461121 has a 6,000 lb capacity and measures 95 inches from hub face to hub face and 80 inches from spring center to spring center.
I have added a link below to our entire selection of axles, or if you let me know those measurements I can find the right one for you.
