Tire Replacement Recommendation for 4.80-12 Taskmaster Trailer Tires
Question:
3,000lb trailer using 4.80x12 tires 1. What is the largest tire size that I can use for this trailer a. 3.25 inches above the tire to the fender b. 3.25 inches from the back of the tire to the closest piece of metal. 2. Does the size of the tire matter for durability when towing or the stability of the trailer? 3. If this was your trailer, what tires would you use and why?

Thank you for all of the info!
We recommend having at least 2" of sidewall to trailer frame clearance and 4" of tire to fender clearance. These give enough room for suspension tolerances so your tires don't make contact with those parts of your trailer.
I have 2 recommendations and it all boils down to the weight rating of your trailer.
For a tire with the same size you want the Taskmaster 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Silver Mod Wheel # TA96RR which I recommend because of the 81 mph speed rating which means you don't really have to monitor your speed to avoid overheating the trailer tires for most highways. This is a Load Range C though which is only 990 lbs at 90 psi so you're shy 1,020 lbs of load carrying capacity with these if your trailer is truly rated for 3,000 lbs.
For a tire that can handle 3,000 lbs of weight I recommend the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" Aluminum Wheel # AM31215 instead. This is a Load Range E tire (1,520 lbs at 80 psi) but it's about 1" taller and 1" wider so your current clearances will be reduced by 1/2" on both accounts. Because of this you might consider raising the height of your fenders so the taller tires won't make contact with them when the suspension flexes.
The size of the tire doesn't really have much to do with durability or stability while towing unless you're changing the tire sizes. Obviously if you use a smaller tire for a larger trailer you can overload the tire and cause blowouts but as long as the specs match up properly the tire size is a mute subject. Both the Taskmaster and Kenda I mentioned above are excellent quality so it really boils down to the weight rating of your trailer.
