I went ahead and looked up the owner's manual for a 2017 Ford Escape and I confirmed with Ford that you cannot flat-tow your Ford Escape whether you have a 4-wheel drive model or a front-wheel drive model. If you have a 4-wheel drive model Escape, the only way to transport the Escape is with a car-hauling trailer or flatbed truck.
However, if you have a front-wheel drive model, you can transport your Escape via a tow dolly with the front wheels off the ground. For this route, I recommend the Demco Car Kaddy X # DM9713093. With this dolly, it already comes with a surge coupler and disc brakes, so you do not have to go through the pain of installing a brake controller or separate 7-way plug. Also, with its 4,800 pound weight capacity, it has more than enough capacity to handle your Escape.
