Is It Safe To Have A Gap In The Jaws Of My Reese 16K Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch?

Question:

I have a new 16K Reese hitch and the jaws wont close around the pin completely. The rod that opens and closes the jaws will not go all the way in and I can not lock the jaws closed. I have had three Reese hitches and none of the had this problem. I contacted Reese and was told this is normal. How can I safely tow a 12K trailer with the jaws unlocked.

I know it seems odd that the jaws on your Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Square Tube Slider # RP30051 do not close around your kingpin completely but just as Reese had told you, it is completely normal.

The reason there is a gap is because the diameter inside the jaws while coupled is less than 2" which is the diameter of the kingpin, therefore a gap must be present.

This gap can be anywhere from 1/4" to 5/16", and will not present any issues while towing your 12K trailer.
