Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2011 Dodge Dakota with a Blue Ox Tow Bar

Question:

What tow system do you recommend for flat towing a 2011 Dodge Dakota 4x4? I have a Blue Ox tow bar, but need recommendations for the additional parts needed. Thanks

I can definitely help you out with that. In order to flat tow your 2011 Dodge Dakota you will need at least 5 main parts. Those parts are a base plate kit, tow bar (which you have), safety cables, tow bar wiring and a supplemental braking system. I have listed these parts below along with a brief description of their purpose.

Base Plate Kit: This is a custom fit part that provides an attachment point for your tow bar.

- Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1981 (compatible with your Blue Ox tow bar)

Safety Cables: This is a fail safe required to keep your Dakota hooked up in case of a tow bar failure

- Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables # BX88197

Tow Bar Wiring: Allows you to use your Dodge Dakota's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your RV.

- Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267

Supplemental Braking System: Allows you to safely travel with and stop you Dakota while flat towing.

- Blue Ox Patriot Radio Frequency, Portable Braking System # BLU37TR

- You will also need the 12 Volt Outlet Kit # RM-9332 for the use of the braking system.

You may also need additional parts like a high-low adapter to keep your tow set-up level. I have included a help article that goes over how to determine if an adapter is needed and which one is correct if one is needed. I have linked our selection of high-low adapters so you can select the correct one, if one is needed.

You will also want to check the owners manual of your Dakota to ensure you are doing everything that is recommended/required by the manufacturer for flat towing.
