The Derale Series 8000 Transmission cooler # D13504 is used in series with the factory radiator. Aftermarket transmission coolers are typically installed on the return line of the radiator. The picture attached shows the placement of both the hot and cold lines.
To receive maximum airflow, the best place to mount a transmission cooler is between the grille and the AC condenser core on your 2012 Chevy Tahoe. Before installing a transmission cooler, since they are not vehicle specific, measure your available space. The Derale Series 8000 # D13504 has an overall measurement of 11W x 12T x 7/8D inches.
In the attached picture, the other installation areas are noted. The first alternate position is between the condenser and the radiator, however, in this position the airflow reduces by 25 percent. The last possible installation ares is between the engine and the radiator. In this position air flow is reduced by 40 percent.
To ease your installation, I recommend checking out the custom GM radiator adapter fitting # D13035. The kit does come with a universal fitting, however the custom fitting will make the installation easier. by using the # D13035 you will not have to cut into any of your existing transmission lines.
The method for determining which line is the return line is to:
1: Start engine while engine is cold
2: Put your transmission into Drive for no more than 10 seconds
3: Stop engine, remove keys
4: Identify return line by feeling both lines, the cooler of the two is the return line.
Installation is rather detailed through the pictures in the instructions which are attached. I have also attached a brief installation video on a 2011 Suburban and a FAQ article on transmission coolers. Although the vehicle is different than yours, the installation procedures will be similar.
