Curt Trailer Hitch and Wiring Harness for a 2008 Toyota RAV4

Question:

My Rav4 has what the build sheet describes as a towing pkg with pre-wiring. What Curt product should I order to pull a 2200# pop-up trailer camper with no brakes required? Or with brake capability. I havent purchased the trailer yet. I already have tentatively decided to order the Curt C14319. Also, how important is the bracket on competing models for the trailer connecter?

Starting with a trailer hitch the Curt hitch for your 2008 Toyota RAV4 is # C13149. This is a 2 inch hitch rated for 525 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. But you will want to consult the vehicle owners manual to determine the capacities of the vehicle. Whichever is lower, the hitch or vehicle, is the capacity you need to go by. I have linked the instructions and a video showing installation of this hitch for you.

For a Curt trailer wiring harness, use # C56350. I have linked instructions for it as well. This wiring harness has a 4-Way flat connector so it offers the basic lighting functions, no brakes. And to complete your towing set up I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If you wanted a 7-Way and brake controller to activate the brakes on a trailer equipped with electric brakes, you would still need the harness listed above. Then you would need to install # ETBC7 to add a 7-Way and the wiring for a brake controller. For a brake controller I recommend the very popular P2, # 90885. It is reliable, easy to set up, and easy to use. I have included some additional links that explain the ETBC7 and brake controller installation.
