Is 18050 Support Strap Needed to Carry Bike Rack on 2018 Chevy Volt Using Curt C11436 Class I Hitch

Question:

How does the CURT 18050 support strap suppose to work on this car, 2018 Chevy Volt? What convenient point does the hook adjoin to the car? the hatch? Hmmm. Are you suggesting to use the chain loops on the curt hitch to and tie it back to the bike rack itself? where does the support come from using this method? thanks, but C O N F U S E D

I can absolutely help clear that up for you.

At one point Curt stated that in order to retain warranty coverage for their hitches, the # 18050 support strap needed to be used for non-trailer loads. Approximately 4 or 5 years ago, they changed their stance on this and no longer require the strap be used, although this is still shown on some of the hitch install instruction sheets that haven't been updated since this policy changed.

Typically, the strap would attach to the vehicle where the top of the hatch or trunk lid meets the vehicle. Not all vehicles are well-suited for using the strap as some vehicles don't offer a good spot for it to attach.

If the strap were installed on a 2018 Volt, it would likely contact the top of the spoiler which would abrade the finish over time. The strap isn't really necessary, as long as you don't exceed the tongue weight of the hitch or attempt to carry more than 2 bikes (which isn't recommended for a Class I hitch).
