Parts Needed to Install a Brake Controller on a 2001 Ford Explorer with a 4-Way Trailer Connector
Question:
I recently bought a small travel trailer 3000 lbs and it has electric brakes. I will be pulling the camper with a 2001 Ford Explorer 2dr Sport. The truck does not have a 7 pin connection at the hitch only a 4 way. What parts will I need to get the electric brakes on the camper working? Will I need to run a wire from the batter to the bumper? How difficult is the installation of the parts on this model truck? Thanks

To use the electric brakes on your camper, you will need two items. First, you will need a brake controller installation kit, part # ETBC7. This kit provides all of the necessary hardware to install a 7-way trailer connector and a brake controller.
I have attached an installation video on a Ford Explorer for you to check out. The Explorer in the video is a different year from your Explorer, but it is the same generation, so the installation process will be the same. I have also attached a link to the installation instructions for the ETBC7 kit for you to check out.
The next item that you will need is a brake controller. If you do not already have one, I recommend looking at the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, # 90195. This is a very reliable brake controller that is easy to set up and use. The installation video that I attached shows how to install the Prodigy P3 brake controller as well.
Finally, I have attached a few FAQ articles on installing a brake controller for you to check out.
