Tekonsha TK90160 Possibly Causing Trailer Brakes to Intermittently Grab
Question:
Hello, we had the RV dealership install our brake controller on our 2001 suburban and have noticed that occasionally, intermittently there is some jerking/grabing when applying the brakes especially as the car slows down. We have tried adjusting the number but it still does it. Any ideas what is causing this?

My first thought was that you might have a warped brake drum, but if what you're experiencing typically occurs when braking at low speed, it would tend to rule that out.
During initial setup, it's recommended to set the controller's gain or output to 6, and conduct some low speed stops as outlined in step # 3 of the instructions. If the brakes lock up, decrease the gain. If braking isn't sufficient, increase the gain.
You'll also want to pay attention to the boost setting. If the trailer weighs considerably less than the tow vehicle, the boost should be off. If it's about the same weight as the tow vehicle, use boost 1 or boost 2. If the trailer weighs 25% more than the tow vehicle, use boost 2 or 3.
I've linked to a demonstration video that explains how the Tekonsha # TK90160 Primus brake controller works.
