Tekonsha or Redarc? Which Brake Controller is Better?
Question:
Looking for a proportional brake controller to install in a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited 4xe. I have the factory tow package installed. I was thinking about the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller, since I tow in mountains, it might come in handy.

I have a great proportional brake controller that is really popular with Jeep owners. It is the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Trailer Brake Controller item # RED24FR. This is a proportional brake controller that automatically adjusts your trailer's braking based on the deceleration of your Jeep. It has a 3-Axis accelerometer that measures deceleration in all directions for precise braking and smooth, uniform stopping action. This will be beneficial when traveling in the mountains. The Liberty has a unique installation method where the main unit is concealed behind your dash and the only part visible is the control knob. You will need the Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers item # RED69FR to complete the installation.
We have a couple of other mounting options for the control knob that can go inside inserts in your dash. This will give you a clean factory look install. The Universal Mounting Panel for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controller Control Knob item # 331-TPSI-001 which measures 1-1/4 by 1 inch. There is also the option of using the Mounting Panel for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controller Control Knob item # 331-TPSI-002 for the more standard knock-out measuring 1-1/4 by 7/8 inch. I have linked a couple diagrams to show you the dimensions of these mounts.
The Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller item # TK90160 will work but I recommend going with the RedArc because of its reliability and cleaner installation. You won't have to worry about banging your knee or bumping into it like you will with the Primus. For a few dollars more you are getting a much better product. The Primus is Tekonsha's basic model brake controller and it does not have the features of the Redarc. The Tekonsha only works for electric brakes the Redarc works with hydraulic as well.
