Recommended Hitch Bike Rack To Carry E-Bikes On My 2020 Jeep Gladiator

Question:

I am debating between a Swagman Current and a Hollywood sport rider SE HLY84FR. Several years ago I purchased a Swagman from you and I’m really happy with it prior to getting my E bike. The concerns I have about the Hollywood is the additional u-clamp part required for a 1 1/4 or 2 inch receiver version versus 2 inch only version, and more importantly whether or not it will let my 2020 Jeep Gladiator’s tail gate come completely down when the rack with bikes is tilted as the Swagman Current in your video does. The Swagman Current is just capable of carrying my current ebike in weight and wheelbase, but ebikes seem to be getting heavier not lighter. So if you know anything about Swagmans plans I’d appreciate that also. I think the RV version will handle larger bikes but does not tilt. In any event please advise as to what you know to help me decide. Thank you,

The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount, part # HLY84FR, is the most robust e-bike carrier we offer. It has a maximum weight capacity of 8o lbs per bike. Unless you plan on switching the Sport Rider between vehicles with a 2" and 1-1/4" trailer hitches, I would stick to the 2" version. If you do need the other version, it is part # HLY74FR. The 2" version of this rack will not have the u-clamp, but it will have a lip that allows the hitch pin hole of the Sport Rider to line up with the hitch pin hole of your trailer hitch.

With regard to you accessing the tailgate of your 2020 Jeep Gladiator, the Sport Rider will sit closer to your vehicle when in the tilt-down position. You will not be able to lower your tailgate when it is in this position. My guess is the average weight of an e-bike will remain about the same. Battery technology is improving, so you will see a reduction in weight of some e-bikes. That will be countered by more consumer interest bringing more manufacturers into the marketplace, which will drive up the weights of e-bikes. My guess is the average weight will remain about the same.

Due to this, if accessing the tailgate is important, I would go with the Swagman Current Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount, part # S64678. Please keep in mind that e-bike manufacturers recommend you remove the battery during transport. This will help reduce the weight of the bike when you place it on your rack.
