Does the 7 prong outlet access or use the brakes that are on my trailer without a brake controller

In regards to trailer wiring harnesses, there are two main types, 4-way and 7-way. The 4-way is used on smaller trailers without electric brakes and the 7-way is used on larger trailers with electric brakes. The trailer brakes won't work unless you have a brake controller hooked up in the tow vehicle but you can still tow the trailer without it no problem so long as you have the right connector. It sounds like you might have a 2020 Toyota Tacoma and in which case, the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C56349 is what you would use for a small trailer with 4-way and the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 22117 is what you'd use for larger trailers with a 7-way. You'll also need the Mounting Bracket part # PK12711U and if you want to control the trailer brakes, the Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller part # 3031-P.
