Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2008 Honda Pilot

Question:

im currently shopping around for a cargo carrier for my 2008 honda pilot. i was just wondering if the C18150 would be a good fit? also, in regard to the folding and non folding version, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each? thank you.

First, the 2008 Honda Pilot with the factory 2 inch trailer hitch or even an aftermarket hitch has the face of the receiver pretty much flush with the rear bumper. That is important because it means that most if not all carriers will clear the rear of the vehicle. The Curt carrier # C18150 would work well.

Fixed carriers are sturdy because there are no additional pivot points on them. But when not in use the carrier will just be sitting back there and may cause clearance issues in some situations.

Folding carriers are great for when you are not using the carrier and want to fold it up to save some space at the back of the vehicle. They do have a pivot point where they fold up and are not ideal for off-road applications or at the backs of RVs or trailers. For Curt the folding carrier with the same 20x60 dimensions is # C18151. When folded up it measures 6 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest part of the carrier.

I have included a link to an FAQ article that should help you take a measurement to determine if there is clearance for the carrier folded up. The FAQ is on bike racks but the same principle applies to cargo carriers.

For any carrier you choose make sure that the combined weight of the carrier and cargo is under the trailer hitch and vehicle tongue weight capacities.
