If you already have a hitch cargo carrier and are looking to determine if it is safe to carry wood safely away from the exhaust, I can only confirm if it is safe if you provide me with the model of cargo carrier you have to get proper measurements. It also depends on what year/make/model you have because that determines where the exhaust is located in relation to your carrier.
However, if you are looking for a recommendation of a carrier to safely transport wood away from a rear exhaust, it is generally a good rule of thumb to use a carrier that has an integrated rise in the shank. With this additional height, you can rest assured that the carrier is away from the exhaust. For a great recommendation, I suggest the 32x48 Reese Solo Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches - Steel - 400 lbs # PS1040100. With the Reese Solo carrier, you have a 4-inch additional rise implemented in the shank itself. The shank also measures 12 inches from the center of the pinhole to the closest part of the rack, so you will have distance from the exhaust as well (as long as the exhaust does not protrude far from the bumper). If you need straps to secure your wood to the s-hook cutouts on the carrier, I recommend the SmartStraps Ratchet Tie-Down Straps w/ S-Hooks - 1" x 10' # 348155.
I went ahead and attached a video of a 2005 Honda CR-V with the # PS1040100 to provide you perspective of how far it sits away from the exhaust.
In order to make sure that the # PS1040100 works for you, feel free to respond with the year/make/model of your vehicle and I will be happy to provide some measurements for you. Also, I can recommend a compatible 2-inch hitch receiver for the # PS1040100.
