I have a 2017 NuCamp Tag XL not the Boondock tear trailer. It currently doesn’t have brakes. I would like to have brakes. Not sure if my axle is ok or if I need to upgrade it as well. What size brakes do you recommend? My tow vehicle is a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport with the tow package. I also need a controller to go with the brakes. Your recommendation on the controller as well.

For your 2017 Toyota Tacoma you will want the Tekonsha Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers, # 3031-P and the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller, # 90195.

As for putting brakes on the 2017 NuCamp Tag XL, that can be done and I've added a help article below that explains the steps. You will need to identify what axle you have that we can recommend the correct parts. However, I suggest you replace the current axle with a new that already has the brakes installed. To install brakes to the current axle you will need to first install a brake mounting flange. This component needs to be welded in place and requires a jig to have it positioned correctly or the brake drums will not properly mount and function. This, generally speaking, is cost prohibitive to most people relative to the cost of a new axle with brakes already installed. The added bonus when doing this, you also get new hubs, new spindles, new bearings etc. and probable for less money than cost of welder to then installing brakes on a used axle. This also provides opportunity to upgrade axle weight rating too if you chose.

You will need to identify what axle you currently have installed. If you do not already know this information, look on the paperwork with the travel trailer, look for identifying stickers on the trailer or call manufacturer. We have the 3.5K Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes that has a 4" Drop and E-Z Lube hubs with 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern at 95" length, # 7685269-EB. Or, at 89", # 8327812-EB.
