Can 2001-2003 VW Eurovan MV Weekender Tow Riverside Retro 179
Question:
Greetings. We are looking to buy a travel trailer primarily for temporary housing purposes, but will need to move it occasionally. We own two Volkswagen MV Weekenders in the years mentioned one loaded for camping and one completely empty with a stripped out cabin for cargo i.e. no rear seats, etc.. I believe the towing capacity of these vans is ~4500 lbs but not certain of that. New to trailers so am trying to get up to speed on weight limits, etc. A few questions sorry if dumb!: 1 Is the RIverside Retro 179 light enough for either of these vehicles to tow? Any idea if it always comes with trailer brakes, or is that just an option? 2 If so, what hitch and related attachments / accessories would you recommend. Im looking at this one currently: https://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2002_Volkswagen_Eurovan.htm

Looks like the Riverside Retro 179 at it's max weight would be around 4,100 lbs which is lighter than the capacity of your 2002 Volkswagen Eurovan. While I cant' find anything specific on whether or not it has brakes I can tell by size and weight that it would have came with them.
So for a hitch for your vehicle the Curt Class III part # 13217 with a weight distribution system like # RP66082 if you would be at the max capacity of the trailer. This would not be needed if the trailer was going to weigh less than 4,000 lbs. Then for trailer wiring you'd need to start with the 4-way kit part # C56175 which you'd convert to a 7-way with part # ETBC7 so you could install a brake controller like the very reliable and easy to use Brake EVN # TK63VR.
