Trailer Lights Not Functioning if 2013 Acura MDX Key is not in On Position or Running

Question:

Hi there. I installed this wiring harness on my 2013 MDX a couple of months ago, and Ive now used it towing both my personal utility trailer and also on a rental 5x8 trailer. Both behave the same, and Im wondering if its the design of the wiring harness. Essentially, the trailer lights wont work if you dont have the ignition in the oninch position. And beyond that, if the car isnt running, the turn signals/hazards wont work. If you have the car running, all lights work properly. I double-checked the installation, and in particular the grounding point, and everything is hooked up as instructed. I asked in an MDX forum I belong to if others saw this behavior, and at least 2 others have said they notice the same thing with the Draw-Tite harness. Do you know if the Curt harness would work similarly? Is this a problem with the Draw-Tite? thanks for your help. I believe that not being able to use the hazards without the car running is a problem - experienced this while moving my son to NYC this weekend....

The Draw-Tite T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector # 118424 plugs directly into the vehicle established wiring harness using the T-one style connection at the fuse box located in the cargo area at the rear of the vehicle. The issue that you are experiencing with the trailer lights not working when the vehicle ignition off or the key in the off position is attributed to the vehicle wiring. It is most likely a function of how the vehicle itself is wired and does not indicate a problem with the wiring harness.

This is further verified since you have seen this same issue while using your utility trailer and the rental trailer. Since the Curt # C56038 plugs into the same connector in the fuse box, it would behave the same way.

You can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and probe the pin locations on the vehicle with the ignition and key off and the flashers on to see if there is voltage at the connection points. If there is no voltage at the connection points then the issue that you are seeing is a product of how the vehicle is wired, and not a faulty wiring harness

It is also possible that the issue might be associated with a blown or missing fuse on your Acura MDX. Please check and make sure that all the fuses are functioning properly and there are not any necessary for use while towing a trailer. I took a look at a vehicle on-line version of your owner's manual for your vehicle but was not able to find any fuses specifically designated for towing.

If you determine that the vehicle wiring is working as designed but would still like the trailer lighting functions to work when the vehicle ignition and key is off, then you could install a universal kit like the ZCI Fit Kit # 119250KIT. This kit will connect directly into your 2013 Acura taillights without splicing into you current wiring. This kit comes with a circuit tester that will be helpful to identify the appropriate wires needed for installing this kit.

To begin installation you will need to access the wiring directly behind your the taillights of your Acura and connect the corresponding wires to the proper functions. Please use a circuit tester and identify each function while it is being activated. You need to match the function-to-function of the wires, rather than connecting them according to color. You will also need to run a length of 12-gauge wire (included with the kit) to the vehicle battery and installing an in-line fuse (also included). When routing this wire make sure that you avoid hot areas like the exhaust and moving parts such as the suspension. I have linked a FAQ article that describes this process.

Since this wiring kit is run directly off the vehicle battery the lighting functions will operate independent of the positioning of the key or if the vehicle is running. Please be aware of this, and make sure that the lights on the trailer are not activated for too long and drain the battery of your vehicle.

I have provided a link to the part referenced above and have linked the installation instructions for your reference.
