Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System for Custom Built Trailer on Rough Logging Roads

Question:

I am wanting to build a micro camper on a standard 5x8foot utility trailer. I will be taking it on rough national forest service roads and non maintained logging roads. I am interested in beefing up the axle and suspension a bit along with better tires. What products would you suggest? Thanks.

For off-road applications like what you are talking about, I highly recommend an axle-less suspension system. Those logging roads can get nasty and you don't want to mess with braking an axle on one. The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System item # TASR5200S03 has a 5,200 lbs capacity and is made for off-road tires. You will also enjoy the benefit of having each side be independent of the other on uneven terrain. Unlike leaf springs, Timbren's Axle-Less suspension units operate independently of one another. Each spring activates only when needed. This reduces roll and delivers top-notch performance, when you are going over uneven terrain. When your trailer with leaf springs takes a turn, one side of the suspension compresses and takes on more weight, and the other side becomes looser and bounces. This causes rattle and can make the trailer lean to one side. But when your trailer with the Axle-Less suspension takes a turn, one side compresses and becomes more rigid to absorb the weight, and the other side expands to normal height to help steady the load and minimize bounce and rattle. The load stays better balanced, even if it is off-center.

For compatible hubs you will want the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly item # 8-201-5UC3-EZ. These also have a 5,200 lbs capacity and have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. You will want this larger bolt pattern for bigger tires.

For brakes you will want the Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly - Uni-Servo - 12" - Left Hand - 5,200 lbs item # 23-324 and Right Hand item # 23-325.

Don't forget your brake wire. The Jacketed 2 Wire (Brake Wire) - 12 Gauge item # 12-2-1 is sold by the foot.

I also recommend using the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector item # HS381-9000. This junction box secures all your trailers wiring in one organized weather proof location. It also provides a 7-way trailer connector.
