Troubleshooting Installation of Optronics # STL2RB and # STL3RB

Question:

I just bought and installed new trailer wiring4 Way as well as new tail lights. Order STL2RB and STL3RB. The side marker lights are not working at all. Ive spent the last 4 hours trying to figure them out. Changing locations of the ground of the entire light. Re-checking other connections. With the side markers built in, my options are limited on what I can try. I used a circuit tester on the back of each led bulb of the side markers. 2 out of the 6 are receiving power, but none of them are lighting up. I suspect the side markers are broken. I would appreciate if you could help me out. Thanks.

There are two possibilities that are outside the box of thinking, however, are very relevant to your lights not working and there are a couple of standard reasons why your lights may not be working.

The first thought is the actual specs on your factory 7-way. It seems as if you have a lot of lights on your trailer, and although some of them are LED which use substantially less power, check the capacity of the connector and then add the usage up of the lights - you may be over capacity which would result in some of your lights not receiving power.

The next possibility is the fight going on between your LED and incandescent lights. This is a very tricky situation as, for now, there really is not a solution other than having all of the light either LED or incandescent. Sometimes, when you have a mixture (LED and incandescent) there is an internal power source fight going on in the wires and some of the lights may just not work, for whatever reason, they do not work. When you have all one type, then all the lights operate properly.

Moving into the more standard of possible solutions start with the grounding. I realize you have been moving the grounding connections around for quite a while, however, if your trailer happens to be aluminum, a tilt trailer or has a folding tongue - any of these factors can hinder your grounding which will also hinder lights performance. You may have to add a jumper to your ground taking it all the to your main trailer connection to get a good ground.

Another grounding issue is the condition of the metal surface. Even the littlest bit of dirt, corrosion or paint can interfere with the grounding process.

When you hooked up the Optronics lights and spliced the brown wires together, the connection may not be solid and therefore creating the lack of power as well.

I have attached two FAQ articles covering troubleshooting installations and basic trailer wiring diagrams.
