How To Install Trailer Brake Controller On 2004 Nissan Xterra Without Tow Package
Question:
I have 2004 Nissan Xterra XE with a 2.5 liter engine. To start off, my vehicle DID NOT have a wire connector to plug in the 4 pin wire harness for the trailer. I installed it by splicing into the wiring of the brake and turn signals. Then I added the CURT 57674 Dual-Output 4-Way Flat Vehicle-Side to 7-Way 4 pin to 4 and 7 pin outlet. The only wires I have left to install are the power black and brake controller blue wires. Now I want to install the Curt brake controller 51140 with the Curt wire harness 51382 to my vehicle but it doesn’t not have the adapter under the dash. How can I install it? I’m sure I can splice into the existing wires under the dash but I don’t know which one they are. If you can help me with this task, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.

If your 2004 Nissan Xterra doesn't have a factory tow package then there will be no brake controller wires under the dash to hook up to. Instead, you will need to hardwire the controller. In addition to a controller like the Curt TriFlex Trailer Brake Controller part # C24VV you will need the Wiring Kit for 2, 4, 6, and 8 Brake Electric Trailer Brake Controllers part # 5506.
We do offer a complete kit with trailer connector as well, part # ETBC7. I have attached a help article that will walk you through the install.
