How to Determine if Fixed Companion Hitch Can be Used with 2022 Silverado 2500 Short Bed

Question:

I want to use the 25K stationary Companion for the puck system on my 2022 Silverado 2500 with the short bed. Is there a way that I can tell if I'll have enough clearance so I don't hit my truck cab and trailer while turning?

I do have a way for you to figure out if you can use the B&W Companion # BWRVK3715 for your short bed 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 with the puck system, but it will require you to do some measuring and math on your end.

The first thing is to figure out where exactly your king pin will be located. If you check out the attached cutout of the instructions for the Companion you can see that the king pin will either be 1.5" or 3.5" behind the axle depending on how you install the pivot legs - I recommend the 3.5" to help you out with clearance.

From here we need to use our clearance formula:

(A + B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from center of fifth wheel hitch jaw to truck cab
B = Length of offset (slider clearance or Sidewinder offset)
C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

You need at least 4" of clearance to be able to make a 90 degree turn. Once you take these measurements you'll be able to determine whether or not you can use the fixed Companion or if you need the sliding version # BWRVK3775 to keep from hitting your truck cab.
