Recommended Flat Towing Equipment For A 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question:

I have a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee 80th anniversary edition. Looking to flat tow and am fairly comfortable with modifications. 1. Please recommend necessary pieces. 2. Do I need the Mopar wiring harness in addition to what you list. Reading about a wobble that some JGC and JC have but not sure if it is in the 2021 model. Do you know what that Mopar RV wiring harness does? 3. Looking at the brake buddy model HM39530. Does the Grand Cherokee require the vacuum pump hookup?

If your 2021 Jeep grand Cherokee has 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case then you can flat tow it with all four wheels on the ground. To do so you'll need a tow bar, base plate, tow bar wiring kit, braking system, and safety cables. I have the following recommendations for you below:

Tow Bar: Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-522. This tow bar has non-binding latches and a large hookup radius to ensure connecting/disconnecting on any terrain is a breeze.

Base Plate: Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # RM-521440-5. These direct-connect brackets make connecting/disconnecting from the tow bar simple and easy. The arms are removable to provide a clean look when not in use. Note: This base plate is not a fit for SRT-8 or Trackhawk models. If you have one of these models let me know and I can find the correct fit for you.

Tow Bar Wiring Kit: Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This diode kit allows you to use your Jeep Grand Cherokee's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your RV and will include everything you need.

If your Jeep has ParkSense proximity sensors then you will need the Roadmaster Wiring Kit with Smart Diodes for Variable Voltage LED Tail Lights # RM47ZR and the Roadmaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit # RM-146-7 instead.

As for the Mopar Wiring Harness you will need to contact your local Mopar Dealer for confirmation. The harness is meant to supply power to the steering pump so that you do not experience the "death wobble" that others have in the past. It was though to be fixed with the 2018 models and on but some 2021 models have it listed in the owner's manual as there being a possibility that it is needed. Your local dealer will have more insight on this as they will have the most updated information regarding this harness.

Braking System: The Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # HM39530 is one that I routinely recommend for customers that have the space for a permanent system. It offers fully proportional braking with an actuator that installs out of sight and remains virtually invisible when your car isn't being towed. The controller also works as a trailer brake controller as well so you won't have to purchase one separately to tow a trailer. The included charge line kit will also keep your battery charged so that you don't arrive at your destination and then have to deal with a dead battery. The Vacuum pump restores your car's vacuum after each braking event which thus puts less strain on your towed car's brakes and ensures compatibility with hybrids and other continuous power-assist vehicles so you will need to install the vacuum pump for proper operation. I've attached the instructions to help guide you in this process.

Safety Cables: RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables - 6,000lbs # RM-643. The coiled design of these cables will help prevent them from dragging on the ground and being damaged.

You will most likely also need a high/low adapter to keep your tow bar level while towing your Jeep. This will require you to do some measuring so I've attached our help guide article that will walk you through the steps to determine the correct rise/drop for your needs.
