How To Charge Trailer Battery for Work Lights When Unhooked from Vehicle

Question:

I have an enclosed trailer we work out of. It has a 7 pin connector to the truck but also has a 30amp service for shore power. A lot of our work is done early in the morning when its dark. I would like to wire up additional lights underneath the trailer but also some flood lights on top of the trailer that I would like to be used both when the truck is plugged to the trailer and when it is not. The clearance lights are all 12v as well as the flood lights. I have a 12v Marine battery in the trailer as well. How can make them all work with the truck plugged up and when its not as well as charge my marine battery when towing with the truck? Thanks in advance

The lights should work whether you are hooked up to the truck or not and the truck should already be charging the trailer battery when hooked up if wired properly. The lights should be powered off the battery which hopefully is charged enough from the drive over to provide power for the duration of the work. That said, the truck only provides a trickle charge so it will take awhile to restore a depleted battery. If you would like to opt for a faster charger you can install an actual battery charger, the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger part # RED96FR is a great option for this and what I recommend using. This will ensure you arrive at the job site with your battery fully charged so you can use all of your lights for as long as you need.

There is always the option of solar or generator power but these won't be needed for simple lights, the above charger should ensure you have enough power.
