Recommended Battery Charger For Auxiliary Battery On Cargo Trailer

Question:

My cargo trailer has a small battery to power the breakaway brakes. I would also like to power some other accessories vent fan, lights, GPS Tracker, cameras, etc and presume I should install a larger battery. I would like to charge this battery through the trailer plug without extra connections through the vehicle and without risk of drawing down the vehicle battery. What is a durable and simple solution?

I would be happy to help.

Since you are wanting a full charger to your auxiliary battery of your trailer you will want to use the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger - Single Input - DC to DC - 12V/24V - 12 Amp # RED96FR you were looking at, and hook it up to the 12v power wire from your tow vehicles 7-way connector.

This will make sure that your trailer battery is getting a full charge, and the # RED96FR will keep from overcharging the battery, while maintaining a full charge.

Lastly you will want to keep your breakaway battery separate from your auxiliary battery, as you want to be 100% sure that you will not have any issues with the battery being drained too much to apply the brakes in an emergency situation.

I included a video of the # RED96FR being installed for you to take a look at.
