Best Weight Distribution Hitch For Towing a 3,500LB Travel Trailer With a 2022 Honda Pilot

Question:

I just purchased a 2022 Honda Pilot with hopes of towing a small travel trailer. The trailers I am looking at all weigh right around 3,500lbs. Some say that I should get a weight distribution hitch and others say that the trailer is light enough that I won't need one. Should I get one and if so which one is the best.

You should definitely use a weight distribution hitch for towing a 3,500lb travel trailer with your 2022 Honda Pilot. A weight distribution hitch will help you in several areas. First it will help to keep the rear suspension of your Pilot from sagging due to having to much tongue weight being supported by the rear suspension. This will also help your steering feel as the vehicle will remain level and you won't get the light steering feel almost like the front end is coming off the ground.

I recommend using the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET as it will provide the weight distribution for a level ride and also sway control to keep the travel trailer tracking straight. This is extremely helpful when traveling on the interstate as strong winds and turbulence from semi trucks will tend to make the trailer want to sway side to side. The Equal-i-zer system is rated for trailers with up to 6,000lbs GVWR and a tongue weight of 200-600lbs. You should be able to get the dry tongue weight from the manufacturer or you can use a etrailer Tongue Weight Scale # e99044 to find your tongue weight. If your trailer does not fall into that weight rating let me know and I can recommend a different weight distribution hitch.

To install the included 2" hitch ball that comes with the Equal-i-zer you will need a 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket like # ALL643216. If your travel trailer uses a 2-5/16" Coupler you will also need the 2-5/16" Ball # EQ91-00-6100.

The Sway Bracket Jackets # EQ95-01-5150 can be used to quiet the steel on steel sway bars when maneuvering your travel trailer if you are concerned with it making to much noise. This is often a good idea if you park the trailer in your neighborhood and are concerned with it disturbing the neighbors.
