Hardwiring a 4 to 7-Way Adapter to Install a Brake Controller on a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder

The remaining 3 wires on the adapter you are using will need to be hardwired in. You will need to use some wire, # 10-2-1, about 20 feet (the wiring is sold in increments of 1 foot), and you will need a 40 amp circuit breaker # PK54540.

On the adapter you should have a black wire and a blue wire that you can wire first. Use the duplex wire and attach the black to black and the white to blue. Then you will route the wiring under the vehicle towards the front. Be sure to avoid any hot or moving parts that could damage the wire.

Route the wiring up into the engine compartment and separate the black and white wires. The black wire will connect to the positive battery terminal via the 40 amp circuit breaker that gets mounted to the wall of the engine compartment near the battery. The white wire will need to be routed through the firewall, either through an existing entry point or hole you may need to drill.

In the cab of the vehicle, sever the blue wire from the brake controller harness just before it enters the plug that connects to the vehicle. Connect the end of the blue wire coming from the brake controller to the white wire you ran.

ALTERNATIVE: You can also check the connector where the existing 4-pole plugs into the harness on the frame rail. Look for a blue brake output wire on that harness. If it is there, you will not have to run that white wire all the way up, just connect it to that brake output wire. You also would not sever the blue wire on the wiring harness.

The last wire on the adapter is for reverse light. You will just tap into a reverse light circuit behind one of the tail lights. Or if the trailer does not require reverse lights you can tape it up and stow it out of the way.
