Clearance Needed For Konig Snow Tire Chains on 2021 VW Atlas With 255/50R20 Tires

Question:

According to your website, the # th2004705265 were one of the tire chains that will fit my 2021 VW Atlas. But there is also a note that there has to be at least 12 mm of clearance. Are you referring to the inside clearance between the side of the tire and the strut. Ive attached a picture to show the inside spacing between my tire and the strut and the two clearance points A and B I think you are referring to. My owners manual states tire chains should only be used on tires that are 16 inch and below.

Thanks for the photo, and in regards to clearance, it is referring to requiring 12mm of clearance on the inside of the tire for the Konig chains that fit your 2021 Volkswagen Atlas with 255/50R20 tires:

- Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # th2004705265

So you would need at least 12mm of clearance anywhere there might be contact, including both points you displayed on the photo. If you have less clearance, there is an option that requires just 10mm of clearance and fits 255/50R20 tires:

- Konig Self-Tensioning, Low-Pro Snow Tire Chains - Easy Fit SUV # th04115265

Finally, the last possibility that requires no clearance on the inside of the wheel well because it attaches to your lug nut so doesn't go behind your tire whatsoever are the K-Summit XXL:

- Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains - K-Summit XXL # TH2004565767

These only sit on the tire tread so there won't be any interference with the strut on the inside of the tire. I have added links below to video reviews of all three options for you.

As for the owners manual, we have to advise following it, but there are also situations, depending on where you are, that tire chains are legally required in order to go on the road, or to have chains available, so it really just depends on the situation.
