Can a 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch be Installed on a 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

We just purchased a 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab, 64inch box 149WB truck that we would like to put our Pro Series 15K hitch into. Before I purchase a rail and bracket kit, I want to verify if I have the right kit as I do not want to drill into the frame. I have no concerns about drilling the box, but would like the custom kit so the frame brackets use all the existing holes. Is the PR30035-386 the right kit? As I read, it looks like I will only need to drill the holes in the box and the brackets will line up with holes in the frame. If this isnt the right kit, which one is?

The Reese semi-custom installation kit # RP30035-386 is a fit for the 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5-1/2 foot bed. Being a semi-custom kit means that there is still some drilling that needs to be performed but not as much as a universal kit, but more than a custom kit. I have included links to the installation instructions for you.

Since you have a 5-1/2 foot bed, you will need to use either a fixed 5th wheel hitch or a slider that stays locked in the tow position at all times AND you will need a Sidewinder. The Sidewinder moves the pivot point back 22 inches back so you are more likely able to make 90 degree turns without hitting the trailer against the truck cab.

To determine if you will have enough clearance, even with a Sidewinder, there are some measurements you will need to take. Once installed the center of the hitch jaws will be 1-1/2 inches forward of the center of the rear axle. Measure from that point forward to the back of the truck cab. To that, add 22 inches. This measurement must be at least 4 inches MORE than half the width of the trailer overhang to safely make 90 degree turns.

If you determine that you will have enough clearance then the next step is to determine if there is a Sidewinder that will fit your trailer. You will need to know the pin box manufacturer and model number. This information is normally found on a sticker or plate on the pin box. Then compare that information to the Sidewinder FAQ article I have linked to determine if there is a fit.
