How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
Question:
Just bought a Voyager brake control. How do I hook this up to a 2004 VW Touareg and what about an additional harness?

Helpful Expert Reply:
If your 2004 Volkswagen Touareg came with a factory 7-way trailer connector, then the additional brake control harness that you will need must be obtained from a Volkswagen dealer. Unfortunately aftermarket brake controller manufacturers do not offer this harness. The harness will plug into a mating connector underneath the drivers side dash and splice to the wires coming from the brake controller.
For your reference, the wires coming from the brake controller are white for ground, black for 12 volt power, blue for electric brake output and red for the stop light wire.
If your Touareg does not have a factory 7-way trailer connector, then you can still install a brake controller, but you will need a few additional parts. First, you will need a 4-way flat trailer wiring harness. For this, I recommend the Tow Ready T-One Harness, # 118509.
Next, you will need the 4 and 7 Pole Installation Kit, # ETBC7. This will provide you with a 7-way trailer connector and all necessary hardware and wiring to install a brake controller. The brake controller harness from Volkswagen cannot be used if your vehicle did not come with a factory 7-way trailer connector. The installation will be hard wire only.
I have attached installation instructions and an installation video on how to install the ETBC7 kit and brake controller for you to check out. You will notice that the vehicle in the video is different from your Touareg and the instructions are universal, but this installation is not vehicle specific and should give you an idea on what will be involved.
It will be up to the installer to determine where the vehicle battery is located and how to route the wires. The battery on your Touareg should be located under the driver seat, so routing your power wires will be different from the installation video. I have attached an FAQ article on tips for routing wires. I have also attached FAQ articles on brake controller installations that should help during the installation.
