Recommended Bike Rack For A 2009 Mazda 6 With Curt Class 1 Hitch

Question:

I have a similar question to the question about the Swagman economy platform being mounted on a Mazda 6. You directed the questioner to a Drawtite trailer hitch which is listed as a Class 1 hitch. I have a Curt class 1 hitch on a 2009 Mazda 6 but the Swagman rack on your site says its for class 2 and 3 hitches. Is that accurate? Can it not be used on a Class 1 hitch?

The Swagman XC2 Bike Rack for 2 bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches # S64650 is rated for use on class 2 or 3 trailer hitches but unfortunately there are only class 1 trailer hitch receivers available for a 2009 Mazda 6. This bike rack will not work with class 1 hitches like your Curt # C11359.

You would instead need a bike rack like the Saris Freedom Bike Rack for 2 Recumbents Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # SA4412B-R. This rack is rated for use on a class 1 hitch, but only has a per bike weight capacity of 35 lbs when used on a class 1 hitch.

If your bike weighs more than 35 pounds, you could look at the Thule EasyFold XT Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # TH903202. It will work with your class I hitch and holds 2 bikes up to 65 pounds.

The ratcheting hooks on center mast hold bikes securely by the frame and come with keyed-alike locks to prevent/deter theft. It has adjustable wheel hoops slide back and forth to eliminate bike-to-bike contact and uses hand knobs for easy adjustments.
