Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2007 Chevy HHR Behind a Motor Home
Question:
I am thinking of getting a 2007 HHR LT 2LT. I want to pull that behind my Motor Home. My motor home is already set up to pull and has been pulling my Jeep Liberty for a while now. I want to flat tow the car, the question being now is, would you happen to know of any limitations to pulling the car? The dealer I was talking to stated that he had heard you can only pull it for 50miles, that does not make sense, but figured I would ask around to see if any one new for sure. Thank you!!

I looked up an online version of the owners manual for a 2007 Chevy HHR and found that it can be flat towed. It gives the following steps: First set the parking brake. Then turn the ignition key to ACC to unlock the steering wheel. Next shift into neutral. Then release the parking brake. You also have to pull fuse 8 from the floor console fuse block to prevent draining the battery. The manual also states to not exceed 65 miles per hour. Any time you ever have a flat towing question, you should always consult the vehicle owners manual because that is the final word.
You will first need a set of base plates for the HHR. We have base plates as long as you do not have an SS model. If the tow bar you currently have is a Roadmaster, use base plates # 3141-1. If your tow bar is Blue Ox (Aventa, Aladdin, Alpha and Allure tow bars only) then you can use # BX1692.
You probably already have safety chains but if not, you can use # RM-643. For lighting you can use # HM56100 with extension # RM-300150-00.
And finally, most states now require supplemental braking in the vehicle being flat towed. I recommend the Patriot, # BLU37TR proportional system. It will apply the HHRs brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
I have included some helpful links on flat towing for you.
