You can install a 5th wheel trailer hitch in a 1/2 ton truck although the best trucks for 5th wheel towing are 3/4 and 1 tons. As long as the trailer is within the towing capacity of the truck (consult the truck owners manual) you will be fine.

There are custom kits and universal kits available for your 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. A custom kit is easier to install, takes less time, and requires less drilling. You can use # RP50064-58 for a custom installation kit. I have included a link to the instructions and a link to a video showing a typical installation for you.

For a universal kit you can use # RP30035. Universal kits take on average about twice as long as a custom kit and require more drilling. I have linked the instructions for the universal kit as well.

Since your Sierra has a short bed, you will need to use a slider 5th wheel hitch for clearance to make tight turns. If your current hitch is not a slider, you may be able to add a slider base. I would need to know the model Reese hitch you have and/or its approximate age and capacity.
