Brake Assemblies for Karavan Model 2990-60-10-LR-BT Landscape Trailer

Question:

Do you have electric drum brakes that will fit a Karavan 5 X 10 FT. STEEL UTILITY TRAILER, Model 2990-60-10-LR-BT? In particular will this product: Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 12inch - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 5.2K to 7K Item # AKEBRK-7-SA If so will the existing wheel hubs work with the brake, or do I need to buy new hubs. Thank you

Although there isn't a database that will tell me what hubs/bearings/brakes were originally used on your Karavan 5 x 10 utility trailer, the Karavan website lists the trailer's GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating which is the maximum the trailer plus its contents can weigh) as 2990 lbs which means the trailer likely uses a 3500 lb axle with a hub that has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. See linked article which shows how to determine bolt pattern.

You can confirm that it's a 3500 lb axle by pulling one of the hub/drums and measuring the inside diameter of the brake drum which should be right at 10 inches. The inner bearing should be have L68149 stamped on the bearing cage, with L44649 stamped on the outer bearing cage. The inside diameter of each bearing should be 1.378 for the inner/1.063 inches for the outer.

If this checks out, you'll need a 10 inch brake assembly. I'd recommend # AKEBRK-35 for manually adjustable or # 23-468-469 for self-adjusting brake assemblies. The self adjusting brakes include the mounting hardware and the mud and crud plugs, the manually adjustable brake assemblies do not and the hardware is sold separately as part # BRKH10B.

Either of these brake assemblies will work if your existing brake drums have an inside diameter of 10 inches and a inside depth of 2-1/4 inches.

You'll also want to examine the inside armature surface of your brake drums where the magnets ride to ensure the surface isn't grooved or pitted. If they are, you'll want to replace the brake drums with part # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K which is the correct replacement if your bearings are the ones listed above. The drums have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, and are compatible with either standard or EZ Lube spindles with the grease zerk on the end.

If your existing hubs have different reference numbers and/or a different wheel bolt pattern, let me know and I'd be happy to assist further.
