Troubleshooting Power to Brake Controller from #2 Stud on 2011 Chevrolet Silverado

Question:

I have a 2011 silverado 1500, when hooking up my curt electric brake controller i could not get power to stud#2 the 30 amp fuse is new and works in other ports. Could the stud plate be broken? When i mount both wires to stud#1 the controller activates.

Since you know the brake controller works when connected to stud #1 it should not be a brake controller problem. From what I have found, stud #1 is dedicated 12V power and a 40 amp fuse, you do not want to keep the brake controller attached to this. Troubleshooting this issue directly would require working with the fuse box wiring, which is not something I would recommend.

Instead, I recommend running new wire to the battery from your brake controller. Take the wire from your brake controller and run it to a 30 amp in-line circuit breaker like the # 38630 from Pollak. Using wire like the # 10-1-1 10 Gauge Primary Wire, connect the circuit breaker to your battery. Once completed you should have the necessary power for your brake controller.
