One Rear Trailer Tire is Wearing Out on Tandem Axle Trailer

Question:

I have a tt that is 31’ long with a load wt around 7400 on tandem axles. Just went on a 1900 miles trip in the mountains and after coming home noticed that the back axle tire on the drivers side seems to have more wear on the back beside part than the other 3 tires. What might a cause and could I just rotate the tires to get more life? Thanks

Helpful Expert Reply:

If just one of your tires is wearing out on your tandem axle trailer, there could be a number of reasons why. The biggest reason for this occurring is that the tire was not fully inflated to the max psi relative to the other tires, which can cause uneven wear. Another issue could be that there was more of a load on the back rear where that tire is, which can cause uneven wear.

Finally, there could be a damaged rim, so you'll want to check that, or possibly an issue with the suspension, such as a bent spindle, so you will want to remove your tire, wheel and hub to check the spindle.

You can rotate them, but you'll want to find the cause of the issue first to ensure this doesn't happen with other tires. I have added a link below to our selection of trailer tires as well if you need a replacement.
