Why Is It Important To Use The Correct Equalizer Weight Distribution Hitch For Your Trailer?
Question:
In follow-up to the question re: Upgrading 600 lb Tongue Weight Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution to 1,000 lb System.... If I upgrade for the times I may be carrying a load in the bed of the truck, what is the downside to the heavier hitch when Im not carrying a load in the bed of the truck? I have a 2018 Toyota Tacoma with a tow capacity of 6400lbs I will be pulling an Airstream 22foot Caravel trailer.

The important thing to figure out is what is the tongue weight of your airstream trailer and how much additional load will you have in the bed of your 2018 Toyota Tacoma.
The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET is rated for tongue weights of 200-600lbs.
The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET is rated for tongue weights of 600-1000lbs.
If you were to use the # EQ37100ET with a lower than 600lbs of tongue weight the bars may not have enough tension on them with the vehicle level to provide adequate sway protection. And by over adjusting the bars to get more sway tension you could run into traction issues on the rear axle since more weight was pushed to the front. This could result in loss of traction and cause the rear brakes to lock up more easily.
If you use the # EQ37060ET for tongue weights over 600lbs you will not have enough capacity to safely level your Tacoma. This will result in the rear of your Tacoma sagging and a diminished steering feel and lighter braking capacity on the front axle. If you attempted to adjust the hitch tighter you risk the probability of parts breaking and will cause the trailer to want to resist turning due to the excess stress put on the bars.
