Should 6 Year Old Trailer Tires Be Replaced?

Question:

I have a set of Hercules 225/75R15 load range E on my camper. They are 10 ply tires and have been on the camper about 6 years. They have been kept under roof and out of the sun, none of them are showing any sidewall cracks. As usual the tread is showing about 90 or better. We are headed to Colorado next month and will be logging about 2500 miles. The camper weighs in right at 9,000 pounds. Now for the hard question that you knew was coming, do you think it would be safe to run these tires or would you recommend springing for a new set…about $500.00.

With the weight and distance you will be towing, I will suggest replacing them. Even well taken care of tires are getting pretty up there at 6 years old, unfortunately. This is definitely one of those better safe then sorry instances.

The Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # LHWL304 is definitely the replacement I suggest as well. This has a 5-Year warranty, rated up to 2,830 pounds at 80 psi, and has an L speed rating (75 miles per hour).

This tire comes with complimentary roadside assistance for 2 years. If your RV or trailer has a flat tire, call the help line and a technician will come change the flat for you. You can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year from anywhere in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico.
