Car Roof Rack Awning Recommendation

Question:

Hi, I noted in the video of the install on the van, that this is not suitable for windy conditions. What type of portable vehicle mounted awning is available for a wind-prone area like the beach, or many parts of the Midwest, including Kansas? Looking to mount on a small travel trailer which already has an awning but not suitable for in the wind. Love the idea of batwing that covers both the curb side and rear. Thank you in advance! Randy

I spoke with Rhino Rack and they stated the Rhino-Rack Batwing Awning - Roof Rack Mount - Bolt On - Passenger's Side - 118 Sqft Item # RR33200 would be fine in moderate wind with the guy ropes attached and the stakes in each leg. The hinges were designed to break first to save the rest of the awning from being damaged so that's why there's a wind warning. Typically awnings would need to be put up in 20+ mph winds so if you wanted to you could use this awning but if the wind starts picking up too much you would want to pack it back up to avoid damage.

The Yakima SlimShady Awning - Roof Rack Mount - Clamp On - 64 Sqft Item # Y96VR has thicker posts and hinges but the awning fabric would still be damaged in high winds and this awning doesn't give you the wrap around shade. Because of this I would stick with the Rhino-Rack Batwing Awning.
