How To Fix Incorrect Shackle Strap Angle with Taller Equalizers

Question:

Im replacing my standard equalizer. The stock equalizer is 6inch wide by 2inch tall EQ-104 The road armor is much taller at 3 1/4. This causes the 2 1/4inch shackle links to angle more. About 45 degree angle with no load on axels yet. My leaf springs are about 23 1/2inch long eye to eye. Will this work. Do I need longer shackles 3 1/8inch ones OR, is it possible to drill another hole above the stock 9/16inch center hole for the equilizer mount and move the lippered road armor one up about 1 1/4. There seems to be plenty of room for another hole on the center mount. I can send pictures if needed.

The correct angle for a set of shackle straps should be about 45 degree while loaded. If you are replacing suspension components it's important that you choose options which are the same length/height as the existing so you don't run into issues like improper shackle strap angle. That said, it's not an exact science so much of this will be trail and error when changing out parts. The shackle straps are easy to replace and cost effective so these are typically what you look to replace first when things are not lining up. I have attached our selection below.

I cannot recommend you drill new holes into the leaf spring hangers.
