Brake Controller Causes Brake and ABS Dashboard Troubleshooting

Question:

I used the correct adapter noted online for my 2016 4-runner with Tekonsha 90160 Primus IQ brake control box. When initally setting up the 6.0 range and using the manual override, it makes my brake and ABS lights come on the dashboard. The box works perfectly and no lights illuminate if i dont use the override to test the system. Is the system okay to use?

The issue you described when using a brake controller isn't too uncommon on certain late model Toyota vehicles like your 2016 4Runner. These particular vehicles are more sensitive to the controller's red wire backfeeding to the stop light switch, which is what triggers the ABS error message.

The only way to prevent this is to use the a diode with the harness and the Pigtail Harness # 7865 offers a perfect solution as it features a diode on the red wire. So you'd plug this into the back of your controller instead of what you have now and wire by color to the existing harness.
