Solution For Transporting A Kayak On The Roof Of A 2012 Nissan Altima

Question:

I was wondering what your recommendation would be for hauling a kayak at highway speeds? my wife does not want a permanent rack system I currently have a a foam block cradle to haul my 53 lb. fishing kayak however, it is very loud over 40-45 mph strap vibration what rack system would you recommend? or would it be better to mount a hitch and haul with a light trailer I believe the Altima is rated for 1000 lbs but I still worry about the engine 2012 Nissan Altima Sedan no existing rails or crossbars

I recommend installing an aero-style roof rack which are typically preferred since they are built to cut through the wind and are much quieter than other style roof racks. The Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRVA118B-2 would be a nice option that is also affordable. You'll also need Legs # RRRLKVA and Fit Kit # DK168 to install these crossbars. This system installs very simply onto your roof by clamping onto the door jams. It is not a permanent system and it can be installed or removed with the provided tool in just a few minutes.

Regarding the kayak carrier, there are really no completely quiet options; all kayak carriers are going to have some noise. That being said, your best option is going to be a flat-style carrier, whereas J-style carriers may induce more noise or drag since the kayak is in the upright position. I think the Malone SeaWing Kayak Carrier # MPG107MD is an excellent option. It has integrated ratcheting straps to wrap around the kayak, tightly securing it to the roof. The weight capacity is 75lbs so you won't have an issue hauling your kayak.
