How to Carry a 98-LB Kayak on a 2012 GMC Yukon XL Denali

Question:

2012 GMC Yukon XL Denali Kayak Roof rack The factory crossbars are not strong enough to carry my 98 pound 21.5 foot tandem kayak. My Denali is 18ft 2 in long. My concern is the crossbar track on the SUV and which towers will work. Im considering Skyline towers from Yakima with aero bars the probably 70inch silver. Probably Malone SaddleUp Pro Kayak carrier with tie downs MPG1001. Also considering the Malone Axis Truck bed roof load extender with roller MAL32VR. I also would consider the Draw-Tite Front mount trailer hitch receiver 65053, but it appears I would have to cut away the front fender / plastic bumper.

For a 2012 GMC Yukon XL Denali, Yakima makes a great roof rack system. I recommend the HD bars, part # Y01156. They are heavy-duty bars capable of handling your kayak. To mount them to your tracks, you will need the SkyLine Towers, part # Y53TR, along with the HD Bar SL Adapter, part # Y03541, and the Landing Pad 20, part # Y00246. The total system can handle 165 pounds, but check your owner's manual to ensure your roof can handle that much.

Since your kayak is so long, using the Malone Axis Truck Bed Roof Load Extender, part # MAL32VR, is a good idea. It fits 2" hitches.

You've also made a good choice for your kayak carrier. The Malone SaddleUp Pro, part # MPG1001, can handle kayaks up to 90 pounds. Keep that in mind should you choose not to use the Axis as this carrier cannot hold your 98-lb kayak on its own.

I've linked to video reviews of each part below.
