Differences Between C12228 and C12221 Class II Hitches for 2011 Toyota Matrix

Question:

Hi, I have a 2011 Toyota Matrix S AWD. The C12228 and C12221 both fit. The Curt website lists the C12228 as concealed main body and the C12221 as exposed main body. I assume this means the the C12228 sits closer to the undercarriage making it more hidden. Can you please confirm that this is correct and tell me what other differences there are between them. Would there be any installation or use issues with the C12228 as opposed to the C12221 or vice versa? Would any cutting of the vehicle or relocation of the exhaust be required with either hitch receiver? Thank you

You're absolutely correct. The Curt # C12228 Class II hitch will install with the crossbar concealed behind the bumper (see installed photos on linked product page), while the Curt # C12221 Class II would be fully visible. Other than their appearance once installed, the capacities of the hitches are identical, as is the level of difficulty that the install involves.

Matrix XRS and XR Sport models that have the fascia under the bumper will require some fascia trimming for either hitch and either hitch would be fully compatible with a stock, factory exhaust. You can see install videos for both hitches by using the provided links.

If you'll be using the hitch for light duty towing, you'll also need a # 118460 trailer wiring harness, a
# C45521 ball mount, a # PC2 hitch pin. For a trailer ball, use # A-80 for a 1-7/8 or # A-82 for a 2 inch ball.
