Best Way Carry Dirt Bike With 2008 Jeep Compass
Question:
Im looking at your class 3 Draw-Tite 2inch hitch which states a tongue weight of 525 pounds. I believe the Compass manual mentions a limit of 150lbs. Is my limit here the 350 or 150 as Im planning to hook up a dirt bike carrier to the hitch which will be close to the 350 limit?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Although the Draw-Tite Class III # 75712 has a 525 lb tongue weight capacity, the capabilities of the hitch will be limited by the capabilities of the vehicle its installed on. If the vehicle manufacturers stated tongue weight capacity is lower than that of the hitch, you will need to abide by the lower rating.
I cannot recommend exceeding Jeep's stated tongue weight capacity, as exceeding it could cause the attachment points between the vehicle and the hitch to fail.
A better solution for carrying your dirt bike would be to use a small utility trailer and a wheel chock like part # RA-17 and tie down straps like # EM05729.
