Converter Box Recommendation for Converting Combined Signal to Trailer with Separate Lights
Question:
I have a 2012 Subaru Outback with factory installed hitch and 4 pin trailer plug. My trailer has a 4 pin plug with combined turn/brake lights. I have a new set of LED trailer lights that have separate turn and brake lights that I want to put on the trailer. Can I use 118158 2 to 3 converter or the Curt equivalent to power these lights. Do I need to add any additional protection diodes for the cars converter? Thanks

Yes, the Vehicle to Vehicle Taillight Converter # 118158 would work well to separate the combined turn signal circuits from your 2012 Subaru Outback with combined wiring to the separate wiring of your trailer. This would be the only product you would need.
Basically, you would want to mount this product somewhere near the connector on your trailer and then splice the wiring in. The box is labeled to let you know exactly which wire goes where, but you will need to run the right turn/stop light from your trailer connector to the green wire on the input side of the box that is labeled right turn/stop.
The white wire will ground to the frame of the trailer and the yellow wire of the box will run to the left turn/stop light circuit.
On the output side you will run the green wire to the right turn circuit, the red wire to the stop lights, and the yellow to the left turn circuit. I attached a picture that should help also.
