Fifth Wheel Hitch for 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

I have a 2012 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.6 FOOT BOX. Which hitch do I need to pull a 5th wheel? Thanks

With the 5.6 foot bed, a sliding hitch will not provide enough clearance between the trailer loft and the rear of your cab for your to make sharp turns.

You will need to use a standard, non-sliding hitch in conjunction with a Sidewinder replacement pin box installed on your fifth wheel. The non-sliding version of the Reese Dual-Jaw 16K fifth wheel hitch, part # RP30047 would be a great choice for you, as long as the fully loaded and ready to tow weight of your fifth wheel does not exceed 16,000 lbs. You will also need an install kit, part # RP30035-386.

The Sidewinder you need will depend on the manufacturer and model number of the existing pin box on your fifth wheel. The pin box should have a sticker or plate on it somewhere listing this information. Once you determine the model of pin box you have, you can look at the chart on the Sidewinder FAQ page I have linked you to in order to choose the correct model for your application.

The FAQ also lists a clearance formula that will help you determine if you will be able to make 90 degree turns once the trailer is hitched using the Sidewinder. Measure the distance between a point 1-1/2 inches forward of the rear axle center to the back of your truck cab. Add 22 inches (length of Sidewinder arm) to this distance. From this, subtract half the width of your fifth wheel. The result will be the amount of clearance in inches. You will need at least 4 inches of clearance to make 90 degree turns.

You will also need to install a fifth wheel wiring harness in the bed of your truck, like part # PK11893-11932.

In addition to the FAQ articles, I have also linked you to the instructions for the hitch install kit.
