Supplemental Braking and Other Components Needed to Flat Tow 2021 Chevy Equinox

Question:

Hi folks. Looking at Braking systems for a towed vehicle. The Demco stay-in-play duo and Roadmaster RVi 3 are what I am looking at, but I am leaning toward demco because it is proportional. I noticed both say Hydraulic brakes. It is unclear to me if that means hydraulic on my towed vehicle or on my motorhome. If they are operated by tail light I cant see it worrying about what kind of brakes my motorhome has. So I have a 2007 Fleetwood Bounder 38S Freightliner XCS chassis with air brakes. I will be towing a 2020 or 2021 chevy Equinox. What do I need? What can I look at in braking systems that pertains to my set-up? What other components do you recommend for my full set-up? thank you

The RVibrake 3 is actually not made by Roadmaster and is not a system that we offer but I can tell that the Demco Stay-In-Play Duo # SM99251 is widely considered to be one the best systems out there and a favorite or our installers due to how much easier is to install than similar options and how well it performs.

Since this is activated by taillight wiring like you noted and uses an inertia sensor the fact you have air brakes would not be an issue at all.

For a base plate kit the Roadmaster Direct Connect kit part # RM-523193-5 would be a great option that is very easy to operate. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well.

The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon All Terain, # RM-522. This has non-binding arms which makes the setup very easy to connect/disconnect.

For lighting/safety cables, locks, and covers for the tow bar we have the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain kit part # RM-9243-1 which comes with all of that as one part number. The diode kit that comes with this allows you to splice into the taillight wiring so that your RV controls the vehicle taillights and does not require drilling into the taillight housings. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install on the front of your towed vehicle and enough coiled wire to go from there to the RV.
