A smart battery charger is one that can be used with different types of batteries and give them the optimum charging for the batteries in use. So for example the Progressive Dynamics # PD4560K18LS8 is a smart converter/charger which has a profile for lithium batteries (higher voltage charging) and lead acid batteries that work best with multistage charging. So a converter like this would work great and would technically be both a smart and multistage charger.
