Recommended Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes Carried on Rear of Flat Towed Vehicle

Question:

The HLY84FR looks nice but is not recommended for vehicles that will be flat towed. Why not and what are my options?

There's nothing different in the ride of the flat towed vehicle than there would be if the vehicle weren't being flat towed, as far as a bike rack goes.

The problem is that the manufacturer of this rack, Hollywood Racks have not tested it for that purpose, and because of that reason they won't recommend it be used on a flat towed vehicle. I can't recommend doing anything that would contradict the usage instructions from the bike rack manufacturer, but I can recommend another solution that would allow you to use the Hollywood Racks # HLY84FR or I can steer you towards a rack that HAS been approved for that use.

If you use a dual hitch adapter like # RM-077-6 for a 6 inch drop or rise, # RM-077-8 for an 8 inch drop/rise or # RM-077-10 for a 10 inch drop or rise, you can use the lower receiver for flat towing your CR-V and the upper receiver for the bike rack.

The Yakima HoldUp EVO, part # Y02479 has been tested and approved for use on a towed passenger vehicle (not a trailer or camper), and can handle two bikes weighing up to 50 lbs apiece and with tires up to 5 inches wide. If your bikes weigh a bit more than that, that rack will work for you if you can get the bike weight below 50 lbs by removing the battery pack. The only other caveat about this bike rack is that it isn't compatible with bikes that have fenders, as the bike retaining hook needs to have direct contact with the bike tires. If your bikes do have fenders, unfortunately we don't have a bike rack solution for that situation at this time.

I've linked you to a product demonstration video for the HoldUp EVO bike rack.
